Ion Tudor IOVIAN

1. the pain of being

i want to sleep and float on water and the water to disintegrate my flesh
to clear up my memories
of dross and fears

but i struggle between the pain of being and the joy of disintegration

and i can foresee no haven
where the weather is not bad
and the ogres do not change their masks when dusk falls
and the winter does not blow over the plum tree at the gate untimely
in winter
and my love does not smell of mothballs and drugs
and the words do not die away

but i want to sleep and float on water and
the murmur of the confusion
deep inside my being
to blend with
the wind whistle across the canals with the wimper of a stray dog
sleeping
on the damp sack on the doorstep
with the rustle of sand inside the walls
with the silence

2. little vicious poem

the sunset shone on water –
but you went away
leaving behind fragrances subtle poisons scarves sensations of cold and tardiness
you little vicious one

from beyond the sunset
i am being followed by
eyes cold as autumn puddles mischievous laughter the metallic sound of the dress

– and the leaf falls on the water and it is not autumn –

and we clandestinely took pictures of ourselves by Foucault’s pendulum
but the pictures didn’t come out good –
a drop of blood throbbing in the sun –

(I do not believe I am ever going to die)

but you went away –
through streets with cafés and B&Bs and green-reddish roofs close to the ground
near the Turkish coffee cups and nargiles and oriental music wheezed on the gramophone
i talked to you
of the trail of Little Prince’s blood in the snow
of the giant thumb crushing him
of the murky river struggling within canals and sparkling with vomit in the moonlight

and you asked
why I had evoked the moon now that all was over
and I would never be able to sleep
but i stay on –

and will tug out of the water the swollen bodies of the poets who met you
in the same cafés and B&Bs
and yet different

fericit
ca Vaca Domnului sub frunza de vișin
ca prigoria-n vântul
lui aprilie
ca roza înmulțindu-se-n carne

cu bocancii grei
cu inima și mai grea
cu gura uscată de arșiță

in deserto clamando”

3. paso doble on the drums euphonium and cymbals

i’d like to open
the door that has not been opened from your side for years
the heart that has never been set on fire by love
the grave of so many snowfalls
the trunk with a huge El Dorado

in muddy boots as heavy as night
i dance in the rain
stamping
on leaves and eyes and dove wings and kisses
inebriated inebriated
with a key in my hand –
of gold of light of flesh of earth

around mei foolishly
revolve lead houses tow hearts poets’ skulls waterless fountains
decayed teeth linden trees in blossom

i dance in the rain and will not hear of anybody or anything

”this is how i want you to remember me” – i say –
”an exalted youth unshaven inebriated with the rain and death
With the blood drop in the corner of the mouth –
blue-violet rose
stained with blood and spittle and cigarette butt and osculation”
i say –
”this is how i want you to remember me – dancing in the rain
paso doble on the drums euphonium and cymbals
in the muds of El Dorado
happy
like God’s Cow under the morello cherry leaf
like the bee eater in the april
wind
like the rose growing in the flesh

with heavy boots
with even heavier heart
with the mouth dry from scorching heat

in deserto clamando”

4. (fără titlu)

and you come home days in hand
one marvel less one injury more
the street is different every day
through what it lacks
though it has no end and never will

from imaginary windows despondency
calls you out or hooks you

a river of light of a forgotten morning
jumps down your throat eager to tear you to pieces

at some point a very old desire
catches up with you
when you think it is gone and you have abandoned it for good
just as you abandon your lover and your home

but you cannot name it
and what will be left of its sweetness is next to nothing

and you come home
and the house is at the end of the street
and the end of the street is no longer there

5. let’s put mascara on the eyes tired with sleeplessness of reality

you wander the streets like a lost child’s whimper
sniffing
in the air
the fluffy greenish odour about to implode next to the shop window
inside you
under the caterpillar track of the bulldozer in black and white splinters

let’s put mascara on the eyes tired with sleeplessness of reality
and leave the track towards paradise
the tram dragging its backache and ennui
through the same streets for years – the woodcock
sadly tells you

but the tune of the feeble i
shatters into thousands of gossamers cold and heavy
against the concrete tall tower
and the trees in the late-night hour belong
to no world anymore

if only you were
a knife thrown at the heart of reality
a saw
to cut out windows with in the freezing heavy night through which
the petrified roaring of spring can be seen

6. “i too was earth/ but where were you”

i lay my soul on the table: a soiled garment
through which your face God can be seen stained with blood
sewn in a weary light

the night wind or the dogs could tear at it but they do not

this man exhausted by doubt and loneliness could raise it
like a banner against death
and he does not

the prostitute with her stockings half pulled down
abandoned in a shrub could wash it
and she does not
and stares at it terror-struck

the child from no man’s land could use it as a bandage for the thorn
grown in the flesh
and he does not use it

what is going on my Lord
why do you allow them to banish you from this world
and we do not recognise you as you walk among us

what terrible evil is corrupting us?

7. eu scriu ca să generez existență

nu mai ai putere asupra mea –
ți-a rămas
doar ura

a pustiu
și frig

cum să scap
de spaima că mă voi prăbuși
în
golul căscat în text

(și o stea tocmai a căzut
a căzut)

dar eu scriu
ca să generez existență
pentru mine
pentru tine
pentru celălalt

7. i write to generate existence

you no more have control over me –
all you are left with
is the hatred
to carve you after its own image
to keep you alive

the hatred –
your last chapter before you
deliver yourself to death –
a drug for the days devoid of truth devoid of love
– an entangled story
you blind sullen figure

and you pretend that history is over and the judges
sleep
in their chairs –
decaying sacks of potatoes over which never
will there float
Your breath my bereaving Lord –

but history has indeed come to an end
and there is no more
salvation

– there has never been – Nobody the blasphemer whispers to you
and we will not be able to get out of the mess
of this nightmare – he says –
which is ourselves – a text with the syntax blasted in ruins

and there will come
the apocalypse of the text
with spasms breaches breakdowns into blazes
of brimstone and vinegar and guilty emotions
with omissions
with chunks of reality forever lost

hell is the Other one – you tell yourself – and you see yourself
in the Other one
shackled – a small animal pretty scared and lonely –
maybe he himself bears
his cross in you

but we are the scented gale
of spring
over the pestilence of the towns and the souls

we are
the poems at large
intestines taken out swollen veins

even though our roots hang out in the air thirsty for love
no land wants us
nor the sky –
our seed is crushed by Nobody’s boots

on the marrow of words
death and nobody
regale themselves – belching for pleasure

the songs
sound
of desert
and cold

how can I get away from
the fear of falling
into
the void gaping in the text

(and a star has just fallen
has fallen)

but I write
to generate existence
for me
for you
the other one

pacea rotitoarelor stele

dacă pe mâini
ceața sângerie
și varul spaimei
nu s-au uscat

dacă a înțepenit grumazul

8. beyond the cry the world begins

if tonight those who never fall asleep and crave for
the peace of the rotating stars
descend out of you draped in ice

if the purple fog
and the whitewash of fear
have not dried out
on the hands

if the nape of the neck has got stuck
in the claws of a cureless sadness
and you can no longer swallow this glass
that life provokingly hands out to you

if the way to the bed seems like an eternity to you
and it is an eternity
and the bedsheet seems heavier than a tombstone

if instead of hiding your face in your hands you get
the fist of reality
in the face

if you can no longer name a familiar thing
which exists so as to betray you
if in your cry can also be heard the cry of the world stained with blood
